Footwear Guidance

Choosing and using protective and offloading footwear.

The right footwear is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent diabetic foot ulcers. The wrong shoe is one of the most common causes.

What good footwear does

  • Spreads pressure evenly so no single spot is overloaded.
  • Protects the foot from injury you might not feel.
  • Gives room for toes without rubbing or squeezing.

Choosing shoes

  • Pick a wide, deep toe box — toes should not be cramped.
  • Look for soft seams and no rough edges inside.
  • Buy shoes later in the day when feet are slightly larger.
  • Break in new shoes gradually and check your feet afterwards.

If you're high-risk

If you've had an ulcer, deformity or amputation, custom footwear or insoles are strongly recommended. We can assess your pressure points and design footwear that protects exactly where you need it.
